What is a VoIP number?
A VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) number is a phone number that runs over the internet rather than a traditional mobile or fixed line. Business phone systems, apps like Google Voice and many second-number services use VoIP. Most VoIP numbers are perfectly legitimate.
The problem is that VoIP numbers are quick and cheap to create, and many can be discarded just as fast. That makes them the tool of choice for a large share of scam calls and texts.
When a VoIP result should make you careful
A VoIP result is a reason to look closer, especially when combined with:
- A text claiming to be from your bank, a delivery company or a toll operator.
- A dating or marketplace contact who refuses video calls.
- Urgent requests for gift cards, crypto or a verification code.
- A caller claiming to be a government agency.
Why sites and apps check for VoIP
Many banks and platforms refuse VoIP numbers for verification precisely because they are easy to obtain anonymously. If someone you are dealing with insists they can only be reached on a VoIP number, treat that as a signal, not a coincidence.
