Why landlines are easier to identify
Unlike mobiles, landline numbers are assigned to a fixed exchange area, and many households and almost all businesses once listed them in public directories. That legacy data, together with business registrations, means a landline lookup frequently returns a name and a town.
The area code and exchange also tell you the general location of the line, which is a quick way to judge whether a call is plausibly from the doctor's surgery down the road or from somewhere it has no reason to be.
Landline or not?
Scammers sometimes use VoIP numbers that look like local landlines. Our lookup reads the actual line type from carrier data, so you can see whether a number that looks like a landline is really a fixed line or an internet number dressed up as one.
Business landlines
For company numbers the lookup shows the registered business where one is listed. If a caller claims to be your bank or energy provider, compare the result with the number printed on your statement or the company's official website.
