Unknown calls from India

Few phone markets are as busy as India's, and the volume of unsolicited calls matches it. Loan offers, credit-card upsells, insurance pitches and real-estate promotions arrive daily, often from ordinary 10-digit mobile numbers rather than registered telemarketing series. Mixed in with that noise are far more dangerous calls: fraudsters posing as police, customs, courier firms or bank staff who try to frighten people into paying or sharing an OTP. Because a missed call from an unfamiliar number could equally be a delivery agent, a hospital or a scammer, many Indians check a number before ringing back, and search the digits to see whether others have flagged them as spam.

Mobile networks in India

Numbers can be ported between networks, so the prefix alone does not prove which carrier a number is on today. A WhoCallsMe lookup reads the current carrier of record. The main mobile operators are:

  • Jio
  • Airtel
  • Vi (Vodafone Idea)
  • BSNL

Common phone scams in India

"Digital arrest" calls

A caller claims to be from the police, CBI, customs or a courier company and says a parcel or bank account in your name is linked to a crime. The victim is pushed onto a video call, told not to hang up or tell anyone, and pressured to transfer money for "verification". No Indian agency arrests people over a video call.

KYC update and account block threats

An SMS or call warns that your bank account, wallet or SIM will be suspended unless KYC details are updated today. A link leads to a fake login page, or the caller asks for an OTP or a screen-sharing app. Genuine banks do not ask customers to share OTPs or install remote-access apps.

Part-time job and task scams

Messages on WhatsApp or Telegram offer easy money for liking videos or rating hotels. Small early payouts build trust, then victims are asked to deposit growing sums to unlock bigger "tasks" or withdraw earnings. The platform eventually stops paying and the organisers disappear with the deposits.

Report scam calls in India

Report suspected fraud calls and messages on Sanchar Saathi (sancharsaathi.gov.in) using the Chakshu facility; report financial cyber fraud on 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in; report unsolicited commercial calls through the TRAI DND app.

Stop unwanted calls

National Customer Preference Register (NCPR), commonly called DND: register by calling or texting 1909 from your mobile, or through the TRAI DND app.

India number lookup FAQ

Who called me from +91?+

+91 is India's country code, so the call came from an Indian number. A 10-digit number starting with 6–9 after the +91 is a mobile; anything else is usually a landline. Search the full number on WhoCallsMe to see whether other people have reported it as spam or fraud.

Why do I still get spam calls after activating DND?+

DND stops registered telemarketers using the 140 series and similar headers. Many nuisance calls come from unregistered individual mobile numbers, which the register cannot block. Report those through the TRAI DND app or Chakshu so operators can investigate and disconnect abusive connections.

Is a call from a 140 number genuine?+

A 140-series number belongs to a registered telemarketer, so it is a sales or promotional call rather than a personal one. That does not make every offer trustworthy. Never share OTPs, card details or banking passwords, regardless of which number appears on screen.
