Unknown calls from Indonesia

In Indonesia, WhatsApp is often the default way to reach someone, so an unknown number messaging you is not unusual by itself. That familiarity is exactly what fraudsters exploit. Messages carrying a supposed wedding invitation, courier receipt or tax notice may actually contain a malicious APK file that steals banking data. Phone calls from strangers include illegal online loan (pinjol) debt collectors, fake bank officers announcing new fees, and callers claiming a family member has been in an accident. Checking an 08 number before responding is a sensible habit, particularly when the message pushes you to download a file or transfer money.

To call a Indonesian number from abroad, drop the leading 0 and dial +62 first: 0812-3456-7890 becomes +62 812-3456-7890. A missed call showing +62 at the start came from a Indonesia number.

Mobile networks in Indonesia

Numbers can be ported between networks, so the prefix alone does not prove which carrier a number is on today. A WhoCallsMe lookup reads the current carrier of record. The main mobile operators are:

  • Telkomsel
  • Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IM3, Tri)
  • XLSmart (XL, AXIS, Smartfren)

Common phone scams in Indonesia

Malicious APK attachments

A WhatsApp message from an unknown number sends what appears to be a wedding invitation, delivery photo or utility bill, but the file ends in .apk. Installing it lets criminals read SMS codes and take over mobile banking. Never install apps sent in chat; use only the official app store.

Fake bank fee changes

Someone posing as a bank officer says transfer fees are increasing and offers to keep you on the old rate if you fill in a form. The link collects your card number, mobile banking PIN and OTP. Banks announce tariff changes in their official apps and websites, not through personal WhatsApp accounts.

Illegal online loan harassment

Unlicensed lending apps grant small loans, then harass borrowers and their contacts with threatening calls and messages, sometimes demanding repayment of money never borrowed. Check whether a lender is registered with OJK before borrowing and report harassment to OJK and the police.

Report scam calls in Indonesia

Report fraud involving bank transfers to the Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre run by OJK (iasc.ojk.go.id) and to your bank; report scam content and numbers to Komdigi via aduankonten.id; check suspicious bank account numbers at cekrekening.id.

Stop unwanted calls

Indonesia has no national do-not-call register. Block numbers on your phone and use your carrier's spam filtering.

Indonesia number lookup FAQ

Which operator is an 08 number on?+

The first four digits suggest the original operator, for example 0812 for Telkomsel or 0857 for Indosat. Indonesia has no widespread mobile number portability, so prefixes are fairly reliable, though they do not reveal who owns the number.

Who called me from +62?+

+62 is Indonesia's country code. A number continuing with 8 is a mobile; numbers beginning 21 after the code are Jakarta landlines. Unexpected calls about loans, prizes or bank fees are worth checking before you answer.

Is a WhatsApp file from an unknown Indonesian number safe?+

Be very careful with files ending in .apk, even if they claim to be invitations, receipts or tax letters. They can install malware that intercepts banking codes. Delete such files and block the sender.
