Unknown calls from Pakistan

Mobile phones and mobile wallets such as JazzCash and Easypaisa sit at the centre of daily life in Pakistan, and fraudsters have followed the money. Unknown callers frequently claim a prize has been won, a government payment is waiting, or a wallet account needs "verification". Others pose as officials, bank staff or even relatives in trouble. Pakistanis abroad also receive calls from home numbers they don't recognise. Before calling back an unfamiliar 03 number, people commonly check whether it has a history of fake lucky-draw messages or OTP requests, especially when the caller insists on urgency.

Mobile networks in Pakistan

Numbers can be ported between networks, so the prefix alone does not prove which carrier a number is on today. A WhoCallsMe lookup reads the current carrier of record. The main mobile operators are:

  • Jazz
  • Zong

  • Ufone

Common phone scams in Pakistan

Fake BISP payment messages

SMS and calls claim you are eligible for a Benazir Income Support Programme payment and ask for your CNIC details, a registration fee or a code sent to your phone. The programme's official channel is the 8171 short code; payments are never released after paying a stranger a fee.

Mobile wallet "verification" calls

A caller says they are from JazzCash, Easypaisa or your bank and that your account will be blocked unless you confirm a PIN or the code just sent to you. Sharing it hands the scammer control of the wallet, which is quickly emptied. Providers never request PINs or one-time codes over a call.

Lucky draw and game show prizes

Callers announce that your number has won a car, gold or cash in a TV game show or network lucky draw. To claim, you are told to pay a "tax" or send mobile credit first. Genuine prizes do not require upfront payments, and the caller's personal mobile number is a warning sign.

Report scam calls in Pakistan

File complaints about fraudulent calls and SMS through the PTA complaint portal (complaint.pta.gov.pk); report online financial fraud to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) and to your bank or wallet provider's helpline immediately.

Pakistan number lookup FAQ

Which network does an 03 number belong to?+

The two digits after 03 show the network that first issued the number, such as 030 for Jazz or 034 for Telenor. Because Pakistan allows mobile number portability, a number may now be served by a different operator than its prefix suggests.

Who called me from +92?+

+92 is Pakistan's country code. If the next digit is 3, the caller used a Pakistani mobile; other digits indicate a landline area code. Unexpected prize or payment offers from +92 numbers are a common scam pattern.

How do I stop promotional SMS in Pakistan?+

Text REG to 3627 to join the PTA Do Not Call Register, which blocks marketing messages from operators and registered companies. Scam texts from individual numbers fall outside the register, so report those to PTA instead.
