Who called you from +1? Look up any Canada mobile, landline or toll-free number to see the carrier, line type, region and spam reports — free and anonymous.

Unknown calls from Canada

Canadians who see an unfamiliar number usually want to know two things: is it from Canada at all, and is it the sort of call that CRA impostors and fake Service Canada agents make? Because Canada shares the +1 code with the United States and the Caribbean, an unknown area code can come from Toronto, Texas or Turks and Caicos. Many unexpected calls turn out to be pharmacies, contractors or delivery services, but bilingual robocalls threatening tax penalties or immigration problems remain common. A quick lookup helps place the area code, spot toll-free numbers and see whether others have reported the caller.

Number format
Ten digits under the North American Numbering Plan, written as (area code) exchange-line, e.g. (416) 555-0198. Canadian and US numbers look identical, so the area code is the main clue to the province.
Example (national)
(416) 555-0198
Example (international)
+1 416 555 0198
Emergency number
911

To call a Canadian number from abroad, drop the leading 1 and dial +1 first: (416) 555-0198 becomes +1 416 555 0198. A missed call showing +1 at the start came from a Canada number.

How to tell what kind of Canadian number called you

Mobile numbers

TypeStarts withNotes
Mobile and landline (shared)Any area codeCanada has no mobile-only prefixes. Wireless and wireline numbers are drawn from the same area codes, such as 416/647/437 in Toronto or 604/778/236 in British Columbia.

Mobile networks in Canada

Numbers can be ported between networks, so the prefix alone does not prove which carrier a number is on today. A WhoCallsMe lookup reads the current carrier of record. The main mobile operators are:

  • Rogers
  • Bell
  • Telus
  • Freedom Mobile

Common phone scams in Canada

Canada Revenue Agency threats

A caller or recorded message claims to be from the CRA, says you owe taxes or have committed tax fraud, and threatens police action unless you pay at once. The CRA does not demand payment in gift cards, prepaid cards or Bitcoin. Check what you owe through CRA My Account rather than calling the number left in a message.

Grandparent emergency calls

Someone phones an older person pretending to be a grandchild — or a lawyer or police officer acting for one — who has been arrested or injured and needs bail money urgently. Callers often insist on secrecy and may send a courier to collect cash. Hang up and call your relative or another family member directly.

Fake delivery and postal texts

Texts claiming to be from Canada Post or a courier say a package is held because of an unpaid fee or incorrect address. The link leads to a lookalike page that collects card or personal details. Use the tracking number from the retailer on the carrier’s real website instead of tapping the link.

Report scam calls in Canada

Report scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca or 1-888-495-8501) and to local police. Forward spam texts to 7726 so your provider can investigate.

Stop unwanted calls

National Do Not Call List (DNCL), overseen by the CRTC. Registration at lnnte-dncl.gc.ca is free for residential and mobile numbers.

Canada number lookup FAQ

Is a +1 number from Canada or the US?+

You can’t tell from +1 alone because both countries, and many Caribbean nations, share it. The three-digit area code that follows is the clue: 416, 514, 604 and 403 are Canadian, for example. Area code lists show which province or state each belongs to.

I’m on the National DNCL. Why do telemarketers still call?+

The list doesn’t cover every caller. Charities, political parties, newspapers selling subscriptions and businesses you have dealt with recently can still call. Scammers ignore the rules entirely. You can file a complaint about a registered telemarketer through the DNCL website.

Who called me from a 1-800 number?+

Toll-free numbers are used by banks, airlines, telecom providers and government services, but also by debt collectors and robocallers. Searching the number on WhoCallsMe shows whether others have reported it, and you can confirm a real company by phoning the number on its official website.
