Unknown calls from United Kingdom

In the UK, an unexpected call is as likely to be a courier, a GP surgery or a recruiter as it is a cold caller. The trouble is that fraudsters have become skilled at sounding official: callers pretending to be HMRC, a bank’s fraud team or a broadband provider are a familiar problem, and scam texts about parcels or unpaid bills arrive regularly. Many people now check a number before ringing back, partly to avoid premium-rate traps on 09 numbers and partly to see whether a missed call from an 01, 02 or 07 number has already been reported by others.

To call a UK number from abroad, drop the leading 0 and dial +44 first: 07700 900123 becomes +44 7700 900123. A missed call showing +44 at the start came from a United Kingdom number.

How to tell what kind of UK number called you

Mobile numbers

TypeStarts withNotes
Mobile071–075, 077–079The standard UK mobile ranges. Because of number porting, the prefix no longer reliably shows which network a phone is on.
Pagers and personal numbers076, 070076 is largely used for pagers (07624 is the Isle of Man mobile range). 070 is a personal-number range that can cost more than a normal mobile call — not a regular mobile.

Toll-free, premium and special numbers

TypeStarts withNotes
Freephone0800, 0808Free to call from UK landlines and mobiles.
Non-geographic at local rate03Charged like a call to an 01 or 02 number and included in most call allowances. Often used by government bodies and charities.
Service numbers084, 087Calls carry a service charge set by the organization on top of your provider’s access charge.
Premium-rate09The most expensive range, used for competitions, adult services and paid helplines. Be wary of being asked to call one back.

Mobile networks in United Kingdom

Numbers can be ported between networks, so the prefix alone does not prove which carrier a number is on today. A WhoCallsMe lookup reads the current carrier of record. The main mobile operators are:

  • EE
  • VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three)
  • O2 (Virgin Media O2)

Common phone scams in United Kingdom

HMRC tax calls and texts

Callers claim to be from HMRC and say you owe tax or face arrest, while texts promise a tax refund behind a link. HMRC does not threaten immediate arrest over the phone or ask for payment in gift cards. Check your tax position through your Government Gateway account rather than any link or number you were given.

‘Safe account’ bank fraud

Someone phones claiming to be from your bank’s fraud department, sometimes with a spoofed caller ID that matches the bank’s real number. They say your account is compromised and ask you to move money to a ‘safe account’. Banks never ask this. Hang up and call 159 or the number on your card.

Parcel redelivery texts

A text says a delivery could not be completed and asks you to pay a small redelivery fee through a link that imitates Royal Mail, Evri or DPD. The real aim is to capture your card details, which may be followed by a convincing call from a fake bank. Track parcels only on the courier’s own website or app.

Report scam calls in United Kingdom

Forward scam texts to 7726 for free. Call 159 to reach your bank safely if you think a call is fraudulent. Report fraud in England, Wales and Northern Ireland through the national police fraud reporting service (Report Fraud, which replaced Action Fraud), or to Police Scotland on 101.

Stop unwanted calls

Telephone Preference Service (TPS). Registering is free and makes it unlawful for UK organizations to make unsolicited sales calls to your number without consent.

United Kingdom number lookup FAQ

How do I know if a UK number is a mobile?+

UK mobile numbers start with 07, followed by nine more digits, for example 07700 900123. Be careful with 070 and 076: these look similar but are personal-number and pager ranges, and calling 070 can cost much more than a normal mobile call.

Who called me from +44?+

+44 is simply the UK country code, so the call came from a British number or a service using one. Drop the +44, add a 0, and you have the domestic number. If you weren’t expecting UK contact, be cautious: fraudsters sometimes use UK numbers to call people abroad.

Does registering with TPS stop all unwanted calls?+

TPS makes unsolicited sales calls from legitimate UK companies unlawful, but criminals and overseas callers ignore it. It doesn’t cover calls you have consented to, market research or scams. Use your phone’s call-blocking features and report persistent offenders to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
