Australian phone number lookup (+61)

Who called you from +61? Look up any Australia mobile, landline or toll-free number to see the carrier, line type, region and spam reports — free and anonymous.

Unknown calls from Australia

Australians are often wary of unknown callers, and with reason: calls impersonating the ATO, banks, Telstra or NBN technicians are a long-running problem, and fake road toll and Australia Post texts arrive regularly. At the same time, plenty of unknown calls are perfectly legitimate — a tradie, a real estate agent or a medical clinic calling from a private or 1300 number. Looking up a number before calling back helps you work out whether it is a mobile, a landline in another state or a business line, and whether others have already flagged it as a scam.

Australia phone numbers at a glance

Country calling code
+61
Trunk prefix

Number format
Ten digits including the leading 0. Landlines use a single-digit area code (02, 03, 07, 08) plus eight digits; mobiles start 04. Drop the 0 after +61.
Example (national)
0491 570 156
Example (international)

000 (112 also works from mobile phones)

To call a Australian number from abroad, drop the leading 0 and dial +61 first: 0491 570 156 becomes +61 491 570 156. A missed call showing +61 at the start came from a Australia number.

How to tell what kind of Australian number called you

Mobile numbers

TypeStarts withNotes
Mobile04All standard Australian mobile numbers start with 04 and have ten digits. Number portability means the prefix doesn’t tell you the network.
Mobile (reserved)05Set aside for future mobile and location-independent services; rarely seen in practice.

Toll-free, premium and special numbers

TypeStarts withNotes
Freecall1800Free to call from landlines and mobiles in Australia.
Local rate13, 1300Used by businesses and government agencies. Usually charged at a local or untimed rate, though some mobile plans charge differently.
Premium SMS and voice19Ranges such as 190 are premium services billed at higher rates. Be cautious of unexpected messages from 19 numbers.

Mobile networks in Australia

Numbers can be ported between networks, so the prefix alone does not prove which carrier a number is on today. A WhoCallsMe lookup reads the current carrier of record. The main mobile operators are:

  • Telstra
  • Optus
  • TPG Telecom (Vodafone)

Common phone scams in Australia

ATO impersonation

A robocall or text claims to be from the Australian Taxation Office and says you owe a debt, face arrest, or have a refund pending. Callers may demand payment by gift card, cryptocurrency or bank transfer. The ATO does not ask for those payment methods. Check your account through myGov instead of responding.

Toll and parcel texts

Texts appearing to come from Linkt, a state toll operator or Australia Post claim an unpaid toll or a held parcel and include a payment link. These links lead to lookalike sites built to steal card details. Sign in to your toll account or the courier’s app directly to check.

Remote access tech support calls

A caller says they are from Telstra, NBN Co or a computer company and that your internet connection has been hacked. They ask you to install software so they can ‘fix’ it, then gain access to your banking. Genuine providers don’t cold-call asking for remote control of your computer.

Report scam calls in Australia

Report scams to Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au), run by the National Anti-Scam Centre. Report cybercrime to ReportCyber and contact your bank straight away if you have lost money.

Stop unwanted calls

Do Not Call Register (donotcall.gov.au), managed for the ACMA. Registration is free and covers landline and mobile numbers.

Australia number lookup FAQ

What does a 1300 number mean in Australia?+

1300 and 13 numbers are business lines that can be called from anywhere in Australia, often at a local rate from landlines. Banks, utilities and government services use them. Some mobile plans include them; others may charge, so check your plan.

Who called me from +61 4?+

A number starting +61 4 is an Australian mobile. Written domestically it begins with 04. If you live outside Australia and weren’t expecting a call, be careful about calling back, as international rates may apply and scammers do use Australian numbers.

Does the Do Not Call Register block scam calls?+

No. It makes most unsolicited telemarketing calls from legitimate businesses unlawful, but scammers ignore it, and charities, political parties and researchers are exempt. Use your phone’s spam-filtering settings and report scams to Scamwatch.
