How the spam call checker works
Every day people report unwanted calls to regulators and to apps like ours. WhoCallsMe aggregates those reports by number, including public complaint data published by the US Federal Trade Commission. When you check a number, we show how often it has been reported, what callers said it was about and when the reports were made.
We combine that with the line type and carrier. A brand-new VoIP number with many recent complaints is very different from an established business landline that received one complaint two years ago.
Common spam and scam calls right now
- Fake bank or card-fraud department calls asking for a one-time code.
- Government impersonation: tax office, social security or immigration threats.
- Delivery and toll-payment texts with a link to pay a small fee.
- Car warranty, health insurance and debt-relief robocalls.
- One-ring calls from international numbers hoping you call back at premium rates.
What to do if a number is flagged as spam
Do not call back and do not reply to texts โ even replying STOP confirms your number is active. Block the number on your phone, and report it to the authority in your country. In the US that is the FTC; in the UK you can forward scam texts to 7726. Our country guides list the right place to report for each country.
