Why the carrier matters
The carrier tells you more than which company sends the bill. A number on a major mobile network is almost always a real person's phone. A number on a VoIP or wholesale provider may be a business phone system, an app-based number or a disposable line. Knowing the difference helps you judge an unknown call or text.
Businesses use carrier lookup too: to route SMS correctly, to avoid sending texts to landlines and to screen sign-ups that use throwaway numbers.
Ported numbers
Number portability lets people keep their number when they switch networks. That means the prefix alone no longer tells you the carrier — a number originally issued by one network may now live on another. WhoCallsMe checks the current carrier of record rather than guessing from the prefix.
What the carrier lookup returns
- Current carrier or network name
- Line type: mobile, landline, VoIP, toll-free
- Country and region of allocation
- Whether the number is valid and possible for its country
- Spam reports linked to the number
