Unknown calls from France

Few countries complain about démarchage téléphonique as loudly as France. Calls about home insulation, solar panels, energy contracts and the CPF training account became so common that the government introduced dedicated number ranges for telemarketers and created Bloctel. Fraudsters have followed the trend: fake bank advisors, sham Ameli refund texts and spoofed numbers that look like local 01 or 06 lines. Erasmus students, retirees in the south and new arrivals waiting for appointments at the préfecture or CAF often receive calls they cannot place, and looking up the number helps them decide whether to answer, call back or block.

French numbers always have ten digits nationally, written in pairs (01 23 45 67 89). The first two digits identify the type: 01 to 05 are geographic regions, 06 and 07 are mobiles, 08 is special-rate and 09 is non-geographic, mainly internet-box telephony.

Common phone scams in France

Fake bank advisor (faux conseiller bancaire)

A caller, sometimes showing your bank's real number, reports suspicious payments and asks you to confirm a code received by SMS or to validate an operation in your banking app. That code actually authorises a transfer to the fraudster. French banks state that their staff never ask you to share or validate security codes over the phone.

Ameli and Carte Vitale text messages

SMS messages claim that your Carte Vitale is expiring or that the Assurance Maladie owes you a refund, linking to a convincing copy of the Ameli website. The form harvests personal data and card numbers. The Assurance Maladie communicates through your secure Ameli account, not through links in unsolicited texts.

CPF training account and energy renovation calls

Callers push training courses paid for with your Compte Personnel de Formation, or subsidised insulation and heat-pump work. Some simply sell aggressively; others aim to empty the CPF balance or obtain identity documents. Cold calling about CPF and about energy renovation work is now banned, so these calls are a red flag.

Report scam calls in France

Forward spam texts and report unwanted calls to 33700, the operator-backed reporting service (by SMS or on 33700.fr). Breaches of Bloctel can be reported on the Bloctel site, and consumer issues on SignalConso. For fraud, contact the police or gendarmerie and use cybermalveillance.gouv.fr for guidance; illegal online content goes to the Pharos platform.

Stop unwanted calls

Bloctel (bloctel.gouv.fr) is France's free official opposition list. Registering a landline or mobile forbids businesses with which you have no current contract from making marketing calls to that number.

France number lookup FAQ

Who is calling me from an 09 number?+

Numbers starting with 09 are non-geographic lines, usually linked to an internet box (Livebox, Freebox, SFR Box) or a VoIP service. Households and businesses use them, but so do call centres, since they are cheap to obtain. The number alone does not reveal where in France the caller is.

Why do some sales calls come from 0162 or 0270 numbers?+

Arcep set aside specific ranges for automated and telemarketing calls so that consumers can recognise them. Prefixes such as 0162, 0163, 0270, 0271, 0377, 0378, 0424, 0425, 0568, 0569, 0948 and 0949 indicate a commercial calling platform, and many people simply block them.

How do I report a scam text in France?+

Forward the message free of charge to 33700, the spam-reporting number supported by French operators, then send the sender's number when prompted. Delete the text afterwards and never tap its link. If you have already paid or shared details, contact your bank and the police.
