- Calls to 04 numbers are usually included in Australian mobile and home phone plans; otherwise they are charged at your provider's mobile call rate.
Numbers starting with 04 are Australian mobile numbers. They are not tied to a location, so an 04 number gives no clue where the caller lives. Mobile numbers can be ported between carriers, which means the first digits do not reliably show which network the number is on today; a lookup checks the current carrier and line type instead. The ACMA has set aside the 05 range for future mobile use as 04 capacity is used up, so you may eventually see mobile numbers beginning with 05. Many scam calls and texts now come from mobile numbers, often appearing as a missed call or a short message with a link.
Scam texts and calls frequently use 04 numbers, and caller ID can be spoofed. Do not click links in unexpected texts. Report scams to Scamwatch and forward scam texts to your provider if it offers that service.
Who called me from 04?
The prefix tells you what kind of number it is (mobile), but not who is behind it. Numbers can be ported between networks and caller ID can be spoofed, so a familiar code is no guarantee. Search the full number to see its current carrier, line type and whether other people have reported it.
