Unknown calls from Mexico

Telephone extortion is a long-standing concern in Mexico, which is why many people simply refuse to answer numbers they don't know. The classic call claims a family member has been kidnapped or detained and demands quick payment, while variations involve fake prizes, bank fraud departments, or threatening debt collectors from unlicensed loan apps. Because mobile and landline numbers share the same 10-digit format, the number itself offers few clues. People often check an unknown lada and number before calling back, and use the government consumer registry to cut down on sales calls.

Mexico phone numbers at a glance

Country calling code

Trunk prefix
None
Number format
All numbers have 10 digits, including the area code (lada). Since 2019 the old 01, 044 and 045 prefixes are gone, so mobiles and landlines are dialled the same way and cannot be told apart by format.
Example (national)
55 1234 5678
Example (international)
+52 55 1234 5678
Emergency number
911

Mexico numbers have no trunk prefix, so the international form is simply +52 followed by the national number: 55 1234 5678 becomes +52 55 1234 5678.

Common phone scams in Mexico

Virtual kidnapping

A caller, sometimes with someone crying in the background, claims a relative has been kidnapped and demands an immediate deposit or transfer. You are told not to hang up. In reality nobody has been taken. End the call and contact the relative directly or through people nearby.

Fake prize from a phone company

You are told you have won a car, cash or a phone in a promotion and must buy top-up cards or pay a fee to release it. Real promotions don't ask winners to pay first, and the caller usually avoids giving a verifiable company contact.

Loan app debt harassment

Unregulated lending apps give small, expensive loans, then flood borrowers and their contacts with threatening calls and edited images to force payment. Check that a lender is supervised before using it, and report harassment to CONDUSEF and the police. Never share your contact list with a lending app.

Report scam calls in Mexico

Report extortion calls anonymously on 089 or to 911; contact your state's Policía Cibernética; report bank fraud to your bank and CONDUSEF; report abusive sales calls to PROFECO.

Stop unwanted calls

REPEP (Registro Público para Evitar Publicidad), run by PROFECO at repep.profeco.gob.mx; for banks and financial firms, REUS run by CONDUSEF.

Mexico number lookup FAQ

Who called me from +52?+

+52 is Mexico's country code, followed by 10 digits. The first two or three show the lada, such as 55 for Mexico City. Mobiles and landlines look alike, so you cannot tell from the number which type called.

How do I stop sales calls in Mexico?+

Register your number on REPEP through PROFECO's website or phone line. For banks and insurers, use CONDUSEF's REUS registry. Companies that keep calling 30 days after registration can be reported to PROFECO, which can impose fines.

What should I do if I get an extortion call?+

Stay calm, don't share personal information and hang up. Contact the supposed victim directly, then report the number anonymously on 089. Never deposit money under pressure, however convincing the voice or the threats sound.
