Unknown calls from United Arab Emirates

With a population made up largely of expatriates, the UAE sees a constant flow of calls in many languages, from employers, landlords, delivery drivers and relatives abroad. Scammers blend into that mix. Common tactics include calls claiming your bank card or Emirates ID has been blocked, messages about undelivered parcels, and fake prizes linked to the big telecom brands. Unsolicited marketing calls for property and loans are a separate annoyance, which the government has moved to regulate. Many residents check an unknown 05 number before calling it back, and stay especially wary of WhatsApp messages from foreign codes.

Common phone scams in United Arab Emirates

Blocked bank card or Emirates ID

A caller claims your bank card, account or Emirates ID has been suspended and asks you to confirm card details or a one-time password to restore it. Some even quote personal details to sound credible. UAE banks and government departments do not request OTPs or PINs over the phone.

Fake telecom prize draws

Calls or WhatsApp messages say your number has won a cash prize or car from a telecom anniversary draw. To collect, you must pay a fee or share card details. Genuine promotions are announced through official channels and never require payment to release winnings.

Delivery and fine payment SMS

Text messages imitate Emirates Post, courier firms, toll operators or traffic authorities, asking for a small fee through a link. The page captures card data for larger fraudulent payments. Check the official app or website directly instead of following the link in the message.

Report scam calls in United Arab Emirates

Report cyber fraud on the eCrime platform (ecrime.ae), through the Dubai Police app, or to Abu Dhabi Police's Aman service; report spam calls and messages to e& or du, and call your bank immediately if card details were shared.

Stop unwanted calls

Do Not Call Registry (DNCR) overseen by TDRA: residents can register their number through e& or du to opt out of telemarketing calls.

United Arab Emirates number lookup FAQ

Who called me from +971?+

+971 is the UAE's country code. If 5 follows, the caller used a mobile line from e& or du; 4 indicates Dubai and 2 Abu Dhabi landlines. Unknown callers asking for OTPs should be treated as fraud.

Are 800 numbers in the UAE safe?+

Genuine 800 numbers are toll-free lines run by registered organisations. However, scammers can spoof caller ID, so if a call from any number asks for card details, hang up and dial the official number printed on your card or the organisation's website.

How do I stop telemarketing calls in the UAE?+

Register your number on the Do Not Call Registry through your operator, e& or du. Telemarketing rules also restrict when and how companies may call, and repeated breaches can be reported to TDRA via your provider.
