01983 is the single area code for the Isle of Wight, off the Hampshire coast. The island's economy relies heavily on tourism, alongside marine, engineering and public sector employers. Calls from 01983 numbers might come from the Isle of Wight Council, St Mary's Hospital, GP practices, schools, ferry operators, holiday businesses or local traders. As with other UK geographic numbers, an 01983 number can be ported or used over the internet by someone who is not on the island, and caller ID can be spoofed, so verify unexpected callers before acting on their requests.
Who called me from 01983?
The prefix tells you where the line was originally registered (Isle of Wight), but not who is behind it. Numbers can be ported between networks and caller ID can be spoofed, so a familiar code is no guarantee.
