Unknown calls from Belgium

Belgium's mix of Dutch, French and German speakers, plus a large international community around the EU institutions in Brussels, gives scammers plenty of languages to work with. Common calls include fake bank staff asking people to confirm a transaction in their banking app or itsme, "Hallo mama" style messages and parcel texts that imitate bpost. Legitimate unknown calls are frequent too: commune offices, schools, health insurers (mutualités/ziekenfondsen) and employers all phone from switchboard numbers. Looking up a 02, 0470 or 078 number gives a quick sense of whether it is worth answering or whether the caller should be ignored.

Common phone scams in Belgium

Fake bank employee and itsme confirmations

Someone phones in the name of your bank or Card Stop, warning of fraud on your account. They then guide you to approve a request in your banking app or itsme, which actually authorises their own payment or login. Belgian banks never ask you to confirm anything for someone who called you.

"Hallo mama" or "Coucou maman" messages

A WhatsApp or SMS from an unknown number, in Dutch or French, claims to be your son or daughter with a broken phone. After a few messages they need an urgent payment for a bill. Always call your child on their known number first; the scammer will usually make excuses for why they cannot talk.

bpost and customs fee texts

Text messages say a parcel is waiting and a small amount must be paid for delivery or customs. The link opens a fake bpost page that collects card details or banking credentials. bpost advises tracking parcels only through its own app or website, entering the tracking number yourself.

Report scam calls in Belgium

Report fraud, scam calls and misleading practices to the FPS Economy's online contact point (Meldpunt / Point de contact). Suspicious emails can be forwarded to suspicious@safeonweb.be, and Safeonweb publishes current warnings. If you lost money, contact your bank immediately and file a complaint with the police. The telecom ombudsman can help identify malicious callers.

Stop unwanted calls

The Do Not Call Me list (dncm.be) lets consumers register landline and mobile numbers to refuse marketing calls from companies they are not customers of. Registration is free.

Belgium number lookup FAQ

Who called me from +32?+

+32 is Belgium's country code. If the next digits are 46, 47, 48 or 49, it was a mobile phone; a single digit like +32 2 or +32 3 means a landline in Brussels or Antwerp. Many international organisations in Brussels also call from +32 2 switchboards.

What is the Do Not Call Me list?+

It is Belgium's free register for people who do not want telemarketing calls. After you add your number at dncm.be, companies you are not a customer of must stop calling you for marketing purposes once their call lists are updated.

Are 070 numbers expensive?+

070 numbers cost more than a standard call and are often not included in mobile bundles. Many Belgian businesses use them for customer service. If a company offers an alternative geographic or 0800 number on its website, that is usually cheaper to call.
