Unknown calls from Finland

Finland has been hit by waves of calls from fraudsters posing as police officers, Europol or bank staff, many of them in English and some in Finnish. To counter spoofing, Finnish operators now block calls from abroad that falsely display a Finnish number, and text messages using unregistered sender names. Even so, scams through messaging apps, fake bank pages and sham investment offers remain common. International students in Helsinki, Espoo or Tampere and workers in the tech sector often receive calls from unfamiliar 04x or 010 numbers, and looking them up is a quick way to tell an employer or Kela from a fraudster.

Common phone scams in Finland

Fake police and Europol calls

Callers, sometimes speaking English, claim to be from the police, Europol or a court, saying your identity has been used in a crime. They demand personal or bank details to clear your name. Finnish police do not handle cases like this over the phone, and they never ask for bank credentials.

Bank impersonation and online banking codes

A caller or text message warns that your bank account is compromised and asks you to log in or confirm a code through a link. The site is a copy that captures your online banking credentials. Finnish banks never ask for these details by phone or message; contact your bank via its own app.

"Hei äiti" WhatsApp scam

Someone writing from an unknown number claims to be your son or daughter with a new phone. They soon ask for money to pay an urgent bill or purchase. Before transferring anything, phone your child on the number you know or ask a question only they would be able to answer.

Report scam calls in Finland

Report scams and fraud to the police (poliisi.fi), which accepts online crime reports. The National Cyber Security Centre at Traficom collects reports of phishing calls and messages and publishes warnings. If you shared banking credentials, contact your bank right away.

Stop unwanted calls

The Finnish Data and Marketing Association (ASML) operates opt-out registers for direct marketing, including telemarketing. Telemarketing contracts for electricity and certain other services also require written confirmation to be binding.

Finland number lookup FAQ

Who called me from +358?+

+358 is Finland's country code. If it continues with 4 or 50, it was a mobile; +358 9 is a Helsinki-area landline. Calls from abroad faking a Finnish number are now blocked by operators, but scammers may still call using foreign or Finnish mobile numbers.

What are 010 and 020 numbers?+

These are nationwide business numbers used by companies, public bodies and service providers. They are not tied to a region, and calling them may cost more than a normal call depending on your subscription. The organisation's website usually lists the price.

Why did I get a call from a foreign number instead of a Finnish one?+

Since Finnish operators started blocking calls from abroad that spoof Finnish numbers, many scammers display foreign numbers instead. An unexpected call from an unknown international number deserves extra caution, especially if the caller claims to represent a Finnish authority or bank.
