Unknown calls from Kenya

With mobile money woven into daily life in Kenya, an unknown call or SMS can have financial consequences. Some of the most familiar tricks involve a stranger claiming to have sent M-Pesa to your number ‘by mistake’, people posing as Safaricom staff to take over your line, and calls promising prizes or jobs in return for an upfront fee. Genuine unknown calls are common too, from boda boda riders, delivery services, landlords and clinics. Checking a number before replying or sending money helps you separate the routine from the risky, and see whether other people have already reported it.

How to tell what kind of Kenyan number called you

Mobile numbers

Mobile070–079The long-established mobile ranges used by all operators. Number portability means the prefix doesn’t confirm the network.
Mobile010, 011Newer mobile ranges introduced as 07 numbers ran short. They are full mobile numbers, not landlines.

Toll-free, premium and special numbers

Mobile networks in Kenya

Numbers can be ported between networks, so the prefix alone does not prove which carrier a number is on today. A WhoCallsMe lookup reads the current carrier of record. The main mobile operators are:

  • Safaricom
  • Airtel Kenya
  • Telkom Kenya

Common phone scams in Kenya

‘Wrong M-Pesa transaction’ requests

You get a fake SMS that looks like an M-Pesa confirmation, followed by a call from someone saying they sent money to you in error and asking you to send it back. Check your real M-Pesa balance first. If no money arrived, it is a scam, and genuine reversals can be handled through Safaricom.

Fake customer care and SIM swap

A caller claims to be from Safaricom or Airtel customer care and says your line needs updating or will be blocked. They ask for your M-Pesa PIN or ID details, which can be used to swap your SIM and empty your account. Network staff won’t ask for your PIN.

Prize and job offers with fees

Calls or texts announce a prize, promotion or overseas job and ask for a fee to process the winnings, a visa or a medical check. Real employers and promotions don’t demand payment to release a prize or job. Verify through official company channels before sending any money.

Report scam calls in Kenya

Safaricom customers can forward fraud messages to 333. Report crimes to the police or the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and contact your network or bank immediately if money has been taken.

Stop unwanted calls

Kenya has no national do-not-call register. Mobile operators let customers opt out of promotional messages, and the Data Protection Act gives you the right to object to direct marketing.

Kenya number lookup FAQ

Are numbers starting 011 or 010 landlines in Kenya?+

No. In Kenya, 010 and 011 are mobile ranges introduced to add capacity alongside 07 numbers. They work exactly like other mobiles, including for M-Pesa and other mobile money services.

Who called me from +254?+

+254 is Kenya’s country code. Remove it and add a 0 to see the local format; +254 712 becomes 0712, a mobile. If you weren’t expecting a call from Kenya, be cautious before calling back or sharing any details.

Someone says they sent me M-Pesa by mistake. What should I do?+

Check your actual M-Pesa balance and statement, not just the SMS. If the money really arrived, ask the sender to request a reversal through Safaricom rather than sending it back yourself. If nothing arrived, it is a scam — forward the message to 333.
