Unknown calls from Nigeria

Almost all phone communication in Nigeria runs on mobile networks, so an unknown number is nearly always another mobile — and it might be a customer, a dispatch rider, a bank or a fraudster. People commonly receive calls claiming their BVN or bank account needs updating, messages announcing prizes from network promotions they never entered, and calls from people pretending to be relatives or officials in trouble. Many Nigerians also juggle multiple SIMs, so even friends may call from unfamiliar lines. Looking up a number helps you identify the original network range and see whether others have reported it as a scam.

Mobile networks in Nigeria

Numbers can be ported between networks, so the prefix alone does not prove which carrier a number is on today. A WhoCallsMe lookup reads the current carrier of record. The main mobile operators are:

  • MTN
  • Airtel
  • Globacom (Glo)

Common phone scams in Nigeria

BVN and account update calls

A caller claims to be from your bank or the Central Bank and says your account will be blocked unless you ‘update’ your BVN. They ask for your card details, PIN or an OTP. Banks never request these over the phone. End the call and visit your branch or use the bank’s official app.

Fake network promotion prizes

You receive a call or text congratulating you on winning cash or airtime in a network promotion and asking for a ‘processing fee’ or your account details to release the prize. Genuine promotions don’t require payment to collect winnings. Confirm any promotion by calling your network’s official customer care line.

NIN–SIM linking scams

Fraudsters pose as network staff and warn that your SIM will be barred unless you link your National Identification Number immediately, then collect your NIN and personal details. Only link your NIN through your network’s official channels, such as its USSD code, app or service centre.

Report scam calls in Nigeria

Report fraud to your bank immediately, then to the Nigeria Police Force or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Unresolved telecom complaints go to the NCC on 622.

Stop unwanted calls

NCC Do-Not-Disturb (DND) service: text STOP to 2442 to opt out of unsolicited promotional calls and messages from networks and their partners.

Nigeria number lookup FAQ

Can I tell which network a Nigerian number is on?+

The first four digits show which operator the range was originally given to — 0803 for MTN or 0802 for Airtel, for example. Because subscribers can port their numbers, this is a strong hint rather than proof of the current network.

Who called me from +234?+

+234 is Nigeria’s country code. Remove +234 and add a 0 to see the local number; +234 803 becomes 0803. If you don’t know anyone in Nigeria, be cautious: avoid sharing personal or banking details and don’t send money on request.

How do I stop promotional calls and texts in Nigeria?+

Text STOP to 2442 to activate Do-Not-Disturb on your line, which blocks unsolicited promotional messages from networks and their partners. You can also choose to block only some categories. If the messages continue, complain to your network and then to the NCC on 622.
