Unknown calls from Portugal

Portugal's popularity with remote workers, retirees and students has brought a steady stream of newcomers who receive calls from estate agents, the Finanças tax office, utility companies and schools, often from unfamiliar 2xx or 9xx numbers. Scammers know this. MB WAY fraud, in which people are persuaded to link their banking app to a stranger's phone, is a frequent warning from the police, as are fake CTT parcel texts and messages from a supposed son or daughter with a new number. Looking up an unknown caller helps tell a legitimate landlord or lawyer from a fraud attempt.

Mobile networks in Portugal

  • MEO
  • NOS

  • DIGI

Common phone scams in Portugal

MB WAY linking scam

A fraudster, often posing as a buyer on an online marketplace, asks you to go to an ATM or open your banking app to "receive" a payment through MB WAY. In reality you link your account to their phone number, letting them withdraw money. Receiving an MB WAY payment never requires you to do anything at an ATM.

"Olá mãe" or "Olá pai" messages

A WhatsApp or SMS from an unknown number claims to be your child whose phone broke. After a short exchange comes a request to pay an urgent bill. Portuguese police recommend calling your child on their old number and never transferring money based only on a message.

Fake CTT and tax texts

Text messages say a CTT parcel is held pending a small fee, or that the Portal das Finanças has a refund waiting. The link opens a lookalike site that asks for card or login details. Check parcels through the CTT website or app and log in to Finanças only by typing the address yourself.

Report scam calls in Portugal

Report fraud to the PSP, GNR or Polícia Judiciária, and suspicious messages or phishing to the National Cybersecurity Centre (CNCS). Telecom-related complaints can be raised with ANACOM. If you shared banking details or MB WAY codes, contact your bank immediately.

Stop unwanted calls

Portugal maintains an opt-out list for people who do not want direct marketing calls, overseen by the Direção-Geral do Consumidor, and consent rules under data protection law also apply to telemarketing.

Portugal number lookup FAQ

Who called me from +351?+

+351 is Portugal's country code. A number continuing with 91, 92, 93 or 96 is a mobile, while one starting with 2, such as +351 21 for Lisbon or +351 22 for Porto, is a landline. Portuguese numbers always have nine digits after the country code.

Are 707 and 808 numbers free in Portugal?+

No. 808 numbers are shared-cost, and 707 or 708 numbers are single-rate business lines that typically cost more than a regular call and are often excluded from mobile bundles. Only 800 numbers are free. Many companies list a regular alternative number on their website.

Is a Portuguese mobile's operator shown by its prefix?+

Not reliably. The 91, 92, 93 and 96 ranges were originally linked to specific operators, but number portability lets customers move between MEO, NOS, Vodafone and DIGI. You can search the number on WhoCallsMe to see what other people have reported about it.
