Unknown calls from Sweden

Sweden is a cashless, app-driven society where BankID and Swish are used for almost everything, and phone fraud has adapted to that. A large share of scam calls aim to trick people into signing in with BankID or approving a Swish payment for a stranger. Callers often pose as bank staff, the police or a mobile operator, and spoofed Swedish numbers are common. Newcomers who have just received a personnummer, students in Uppsala or Lund, and workers relocating to Stockholm get calls from employers, landlords and agencies too, so checking an 070, 072 or 010 number before trusting the caller is a sensible habit.

Common phone scams in Sweden

BankID login scams

A caller claims to be from your bank's security team, the police or a parcel service and asks you to open BankID to "verify" your identity or stop a fraudulent payment. In reality you are logging the scammer into your bank. Never open BankID because someone called you; the app warns against this too.

"Hej mamma" messages

A text or WhatsApp message from an unknown number claims your child has a new phone and needs help paying an invoice or making a Swish payment right away. The urgency is part of the trick. Call your child on the number you already have before sending money.

Fake parcel and authority texts

SMS messages pretend to come from PostNord, the Swedish Tax Agency or Kronofogden, demanding a small fee or warning of a debt. The link leads to a page collecting card details or BankID. Swedish authorities send post or use secure digital mailboxes such as Kivra, not texts with payment links.

Report scam calls in Sweden

Report fraud attempts and completed frauds to the police (Polisen) online or by calling 114 14. Contact your bank immediately to block cards and BankID if you have shared anything. Complaints about aggressive telemarketing can be reported to the Swedish Consumer Agency (Konsumentverket).

Stop unwanted calls

NIX-Telefon (nixtelefon.org) is Sweden's register for people who do not want sales calls. Since 2022 Swedish law also requires telemarketing calls to consumers to be confirmed in writing before an agreement is binding.

Sweden number lookup FAQ

How do I know if a Swedish number is a mobile?+

Swedish mobile numbers start with 07, usually 070, 072, 073, 076 or 079, which appear as +46 70 and so on from abroad. Landlines start with a geographic code like 08 for Stockholm. Ported numbers keep their prefix, so the operator cannot be inferred.

Who called me from +46 8?+

+46 8 is the area code for Stockholm, so the call came from a landline or business switchboard in the Stockholm region. Since scammers can spoof Swedish numbers, be careful if a caller on a +46 8 number asks you to open BankID or move money.

What does NIX-Telefon do?+

NIX-Telefon is a free register you can join to block sales calls to your personal numbers. Companies that make telemarketing calls are expected to check it. It does not stop scammers, who ignore the rules, so you may still receive fraudulent calls.
