Unknown calls from Turkey

Phone fraud in Turkey frequently relies on fear of authority. Callers claim to be police officers or prosecutors and tell people that their identity has been used by a terrorist organisation, then demand money, gold or bank access to "clear their name". Alongside these calls come SMS messages imitating e-Devlet, banks, cargo companies or highway toll systems. Many households also receive marketing calls they never agreed to. Looking up an unknown 05XX or 0850 number has become a routine first step before returning a call, especially for older relatives who are typically targeted by impersonators.

Common phone scams in Turkey

Fake police or prosecutor calls

The caller says your name appears in a terrorism or money-laundering investigation and orders you to keep the call secret. To prove innocence, you are told to withdraw money or gold and hand it to a courier, or transfer it to a "safe" account. Turkish police and prosecutors never ask for money by phone.

Toll and fine payment SMS

Messages claim you have unpaid highway toll (HGS) charges or a traffic fine and link to a site that copies official designs. Card details entered there are used for fraudulent purchases. Check debts only through e-Devlet or your bank's official app.

Cargo delivery messages

SMS texts from unknown numbers say a package is held because of a missing address or small fee, with a link to pay. The site steals card information. Cargo companies send tracking information from registered sender names; verify the shipment on the company's own website.

Report scam calls in Turkey

Report fraud attempts to the police or gendarmerie via 112 or at a prosecutor's office; notify your bank immediately; complain about unwanted commercial messages through İYS or the Ministry of Trade.

Stop unwanted calls

İleti Yönetim Sistemi (İYS) at iys.org.tr lets you withdraw consent for commercial calls and SMS from businesses.

Turkey number lookup FAQ

Who called me from +90?+

+90 is Turkey's country code. If 5 follows, it's a mobile number; landline calls show a three-digit area code like 212 for Istanbul's European side. Calls demanding secrecy and money are almost always scams.

Who uses 0850 numbers?+

0850 numbers are nationwide lines used mainly by companies, banks and call centres. Many are legitimate, but debt collectors and sales teams also use them. Check the number before returning a call.

How can I stop marketing calls in Turkey?+

Withdraw your consent for commercial calls and messages through the İYS website or app. Companies must check İYS before contacting consumers, so continued calls after opting out can be reported.
