- Since 1 October 2019 Ofcom has capped the wholesale rate for calls to 070 numbers at the mobile termination rate, so many providers now charge them like mobile calls, but some still charge more or exclude them from bundles. Check your tariff.
070 numbers are personal numbers: they forward calls to another phone chosen by the number's owner, such as a mobile, a landline or an internet phone. They were designed to give people one number that follows them around. Because 070 numbers look very like 07 mobile numbers, they have long been associated with scams in which people are tricked into calling back at a high rate, and with fraudsters who want to hide their real number. Ofcom's 2019 price cap reduced costs, but callers still cannot tell where a call to an 070 number will end up. Treat unexpected 070 calls with suspicion.
Do not return missed calls or reply to texts from unknown 070 numbers. A one-ring missed call designed to make you call back is a known tactic.
Who called me from 070?
The prefix tells you what kind of number it is (personal numbering), but not who is behind it. Numbers can be ported between networks and caller ID can be spoofed, so a familiar code is no guarantee. Search the full number to see its current carrier, line type and whether other people have reported it.
